Wine cabinet guide
Find the perfect wine cabinet
for you
Whether you are buying your first wine cabinet or have decided you need more space at home or at your holiday home, the question is the same – which type of wine cabinet should you choose?
A wine cabinet that meets your needs
With a wine cabinet, storing wine correctly is easy. This guide will help you find a wine cabinet that suits you perfectly.
To begin with, it helps to ask yourself a few questions:
How much space do you have?
The space available can be decisive when choosing a wine cabinet. Our range starts with models just 15 cm wide – ideal where space is limited, and easy to fit into almost any home. Temptech also offers a wide selection of large wine cabinets for those with more room and larger collections.
We recommend a freestanding wine cabinet if you want the freedom to move it later. Most of our built-in and integrated models can also stand freely. Remember that a freestanding wine cabinet needs around 10 cm of clearance on all sides to prevent overheating.
Freestanding or installed in the kitchen?
Our under-counter wine cabinets are very often installed as part of the kitchen. Integrated wine cabinets give a seamless look: they have a removable plinth, and ventilation is provided through a grille in the kitchen plinth instead. Integrated models can also be used freestanding.
Built-in wine cabinets, on the other hand, have a fixed plinth and are slid in between two kitchen units, so the plinth ends on either side of the cabinet. Built-in models can also be used freestanding.
We also offer wine cabinets for integration in a tall cabinet – unlike our under-counter models, these cannot be used freestanding.
How many bottles do you want to store?
It is not always easy to know in advance, but a good tip is to choose a cabinet with room for more bottles than you first had in mind. With a wine cabinet, your interest in wine tends to grow – and so does the need for more space.
Tip: use the filters to narrow down products to your needs and preferences.
Try them in a specific category or in the complete range.
One or two temperature zones?
If you want to store both white and red wine correctly, we recommend a wine cabinet with two temperature zones. You can then serve both at the right temperature from the same cabinet. For long-term storage, we recommend setting the cabinet to 12°C.
Tip: if the cabinet will stand somewhere with a room temperature below 18°C, a dual-zone model is a wise choice. Multi-zone wine cabinets have a heating function, while single-zone models only cool.

Freestanding wine cabinets
As the name suggests, a freestanding wine cabinet can stand on its own, so you can place it exactly where you want. Freestanding models offer plenty of flexibility and are easy to move if needed.
A freestanding wine cabinet needs a little space to the wall behind it and to surrounding furniture – worth keeping in mind when deciding where it should go.
Integrated under counter
An integrated wine cabinet comes with a removable plinth. Remove it, and the cabinet can be installed seamlessly in your kitchen by continuing the kitchen plinth in front, with an integrated ventilation grille. The wine cabinet then becomes a natural part of the whole.
Built-in under counter
Built-in under-counter wine cabinets are easy to install and easy to find room for. They are ventilated at the front, so they do not need the same clearance as freestanding models. You can simply build one in wherever there is space – for example where a kitchen cupboard used to be.
Integrated in a tall cabinet
A wine cabinet for tall-cabinet integration is installed in the kitchen’s tall housing unit. It becomes a natural part of the kitchen and is installed in the same way as a built-in oven or coffee machine.
Tip: many of our customers are now replacing their built-in coffee machine with a wine cabinet.
Frequently asked questions when buying a wine cabinet (FAQ)
- Freestanding wine cabinets can, as the name suggests, stand on their own – so you can place them exactly where you want. Freestanding models offer plenty of flexibility and are easy to move whenever you wish.
- Wine cabinets for built-in under-counter installation have ventilation at the front, allowing the cabinet to be placed in a recess.
- Models for integrated under-counter installation come with a removable plinth, allowing the cabinet to be installed behind the kitchen plinth with an integrated ventilation grille.
- Wine cabinets for integration in a tall cabinet can be installed in tall-cabinet recesses. Tall-cabinet models require ventilation through a grille in the kitchen plinth and airflow up towards the ceiling.

The temperature in a wine cabinet is controlled at one or more levels using temperature zones. The ideal serving temperature varies by type of wine – white and sparkling wines are enjoyed cooler than red. Read more about the right serving temperature.
If you want perfectly tempered, ready-to-serve red, white and sparkling wine from the same cabinet, consider a model with two temperature zones. If you store sparkling, white and red wine in the same zone, we recommend a temperature of 12°C.
Wine cabinets with one temperature zone A single-zone wine cabinet can be set between 5 and 20°C, and the temperature applies to the entire cabinet.
Wine cabinets with two temperature zones A dual-zone wine cabinet lets you store different types of wine at different temperatures – for example white and sparkling wine at 7°C and red wine at 14°C. The zones are divided at the middle of the cabinet, with the cooler zone at the top and the warmer zone at the bottom. The upper and lower zones should differ by at least 1°C.
The stated bottle capacity is based on maximum use of space, measured with all shelves in place and using standard 75 cl Bordeaux bottles stored “top to bottom”. As bottle shapes and sizes vary, the actual capacity may in many cases be slightly lower than stated. This calculation method is standard among most wine cabinet manufacturers.
To store wine in the best possible way, the 5 golden rules must be observed. The result is better longevity, better flavour and an even better wine experience. When you store your wine in a Temptech wine cabinet, you can rest assured that all five are taken care of!
- Correct and constant temperature To preserve the quality of the wine, it should not be stored too cold or too warm. As a rule, the temperature for long-term storage should be between 10 and 12°C.
- Optimal humidity Humidity for wine storage should be between 50 and 70 per cent. If it is too low, the cork can dry out and let in air, which can impair the quality of the wine.
- Protection from sunlight and heat Excessive light and heat can accelerate the ageing process of wine, and sunlight also contains UV rays that can damage it. Our wine cabinets have protective UV filters in the glass doors and LED lighting that emits no heat.
- Protection from unwanted odours Odours from the surroundings or from treated wooden shelves can penetrate the cork and impair quality. Our wine cabinets have unvarnished wooden shelves that release no odours, and most of our models are also fitted with an active carbon filter that purifies the air inside the cabinet.
- Low vibration Vibrations – from the compressor, for example – can spread through the shelving system and adversely affect the development of the wine. Our wine cabinets are fitted with vibration dampers that protect the wine by significantly reducing vibrations.
